The goal of forgiveness is restoration. Restoration of your peace
of mind and restoration of a broken relationship. The second goal
may not be possible, because the other party does not want to put
away the contention. However, the first is achievable, since it
depends only on one party to the contentious issue. Forgiveness is
a powerful tool for restoring your peace of mind. You are at
peace even with those that consider you an enemy. The scripture
Matthew 6: 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your
heavenly Father will also forgive you:
Mathew 6: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses,
neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without
which no man shall see the Lord:
Romans 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things
honest in the sight of all men. 18If it be possible,
as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Roman
12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place
unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay,
saith the Lord.
These passages make it clear that to receive anything from God we
must forgive. God gives us no option. We have no luxury of making
pre-conditions before we can forgive our fellow human being. God
requires repentance from us, for us to be forgiven but we cannot
require repentance or even any act of contrition from those who
offend us, no matter how great the offense. Remember God's
requirement of repentance from us, is for our own good so that our
conscience may be clear and we may not be taken advantage of by
Satan, who is always ready to bring any accusation about us to
Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is
come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the
power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down,
which accused them before our God day and night.
Satan can bring an accusation, but God will give evidence of our
justification, in the power of the sacrifice of His Son on the
cross and His Resurrection. God can place a requirement for our
forgiveness, because he first extended His Mercy to us even when
we rejected it.
Romans 5: 88 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that,
while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much
more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved
from wrath through him. 10For if, when we were enemies,
we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more,
being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11And
not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
by whom we have now received the atonement.
Forgiveness is not easy, but it is powerful. It can be done if the
love of Christ is in our hearts. Jesus, forgave His enemies, even
as they were nailing him to the cross. Stephen forgave his enemies
even as they were stoning him to death. The scripture says
forgiveness is possible even in extreme circumstances.
Philippians 4: 13 I can do all things through Christ which
Obeying this command will give us favor with God and will open
the door of Blessings. Let us go out and practice forgiveness
today and every day.
