A TECHNICAL ANALYSIS OF EZEKWESILI’S BRING BACK OUR GIRLS CAMPAIGN
by Kali Gwegwe

Let me also add that like every other Nigerian, including Dr. Oby Ezekwisili, Jonathan is not a perfect person. This is why he welcomes criticisms. The likes of Ezekwisili take this as weakness. It is quite unfortunate that some persons have refused to accept that criticism is not the same as insult. They find it difficult to agree that hate is different from politics. The Ezekwisilis of our time believe political opposition is the same thing as ventilation of frustration.

The abduction of over 200 girls writing the West African School Certificate Examination in Chibok, Borno State, North-East Nigeria has thrown up a whole lot of challenges. First, is the problem of lack of specialized expertise in dealing with the problems of terrorism, which is new to the Nigerian community. There is also the threat posed by a clique of unusual activists, parading themselves as patriots. They have been leading a tainted #Bring Back Our Girls campaigns, which is clearly an anti-GEJ political exercise, with a secondary focus on the 2015 presidential election. The activities of these campaigners can be best described as an expensive investment to deceive and mislead gullible citizens.

There are two distinct voices in the #Bring Back Our Girls campaign. While the solemn voice is simply to draw attention to the evil done the girls under abduction; the fierce voice, led by former minister in the federal executive council, Dr. Oby Ezekwisili is out to paint the picture of Jonathan as an incapable president. Notable among the solemn #Bring Back Our Girls campaigners have been President Barak Obama of the United States and his wife, Michelle. They neither casted aspersion nor rained insults on President Goodluck Jonathan. Rather, the Obamas, joined forces with the rest of the international community as individuals and as a government to seeking solutions to the problem on ground.

To begin with, Dr. Ezekwisili has no moral justification to claim that she is among those who should claim the “Chibok girls are ours.” As minister during the Obasanjo administration, there was nothing tangible she did to take side with the downtrodden. She was pro elitist in her presentations and approaches. Caught up in the mire and lust for power, Ezekwisili has suddenly realized the activist in her. The former minister turning out to an activist is not even the problem. The problem is in her thinking that all Nigerians are fools.

In the introductory note on her Twitter handle, it is written out clearly: “A fiercely passionate believer in the public good of nations, serving before leading. Validated by God & my Dad who taught me to never dignify nonsense.” What she is trying to let Nigerians know is that she has served this country enough. This is the time for her to lead. To achieve this dream, she has decided to pull GEJ down so that she can climb up the Aso Rock.

Without doubt, Ezekwisili, like Jonathan has the right to vie for the exalted office of the Nigerian presidency. What she does not have is the right to tarnish the image of President Jonathan and the institution of the Nigerian presidency.

Perhaps, one should point out clearly here that the primary aim of a section of the #Bring Back Our Girls campaigners is to stampede the federal government in to instructing the military to apply force in rescuing the Chibok girls so that the abductors will be forced to them. This will create an opportunity for them to find justifiable reason to make Nigeria ungovernable for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Dr. Oby Ezekwisili and her cohorts should realize that there is only one Nigeria. Which country will they rule after destroying Nigeria? Let them understand that nature cannot be cheated. They do not have the monopoly of disguised violence. They will surely reap whatever they are sowing today even if power slips into their hands.

Jonathan is a patriotic, humble, and listening president. Nigerians should rally around him and offer far reaching counsels. Sadly, the likes of Ezekwisili have overrated themselves above measure. It is their thinking that they are wiser, more intelligent, and more connected than Jonathan is. They have been so blinded by the lust for power that they could not remember that power comes from God. No matter all the gang-ups, Jonathan will remain president as long as God has not changed His mind.

Let us spread the message: #Don’t Make Nigeria Ungovernable.
